ENLARGE MAP OF IBIZA ISLAND (750K)

The island, whose dimensions are approximately 20 to 30 km, is crossed by two hills that rise in the northern and southern.
The main findings of these is part of San Jose (476 meters).
Ibiza suddenly became very popular in the sixties, when she was elected as a preferred destination by European hippies.
Initially sought for its location and distance from the most beaten routes, it soon became a symbol for a company that was looking for new styles, away from conventions.

EIVISSA
The origins of the town of Ibiza, capital island, dates to 654 BC when the Carthaginians founded the colony of Ibosim.
When in 902 the Arabs conquered the city, changed its name to Yabisali Madina, was built a triple wall, with numerous internal structures, some still visible.
Fallen to the Christians in 1235, the mosque was demolished and instead began the construction of today's Cathedral, later enlarged in the sixteenth century with elements in Catalan Gothic style.
At that point it was immediately understood that the walls could not resist the new technical inventions in the field of war, so in 1554 Charles V, with the help of the Bishop of Valencia Tliomas de Villanueva, built the fortress still dominates the whole city.
This is a Polygonal Six Citadel Bastions for the disposition of the guns, Ramparts to seven in 1578, after a series of attacks by the Turks.
Ibiza is divided into the Lower Town, home to the main shopping areas, and City High.
The old town, Dalt Vila, is made from the center closed by walls in the sixteenth century. This is one of the oldest fortified towns of Europe, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
In front of the port city is the Monument als Corsaris dedicated to the most famous pirate island, Antonio Riquer Arabs, active in the first half of the nineteenth century. This part of town that lies closest to the sea includes the Western District of La Marina, with shops, boutiques and restaurants, and the ancient eastern district of Sa Penya.
The Navy is always a very lively area, day or night, with a number of cafes and clubs where you can meet the most eccentric characters that populate it.
Instead of returning to the port, we recognize the church of Sant Elm, built in the eighteenth century to be dedicated to San Salvador de la Marina, the protector of fishermen.
From the Lower Town we head toward the Acropolis from the Placa de Constituciķ, where you keep a busy outdoor vegetable market, the Mercat Veli, and I took through the famous de ses Taules.
It is a stone door with drawbridge, flanked by copies of two headless Roman statues, one of which is the goddess Juno.
Going into the walls, immediately next to the arsenal that is protected by very thick walls, housed the explosives to defend the citadel.
The entrance is a statue of the Roman commander Lucius Oculacio.
The northeastern corner of town is the Santa Baluard Lluch, highly elongated, where, surrounded by thick vegetation, is perfectly reconstructed Ex powders, the powder magazine, which boasts the best views of the Lower Town and the harbor.
Along the eastern side, towards the Baluard de Santa Tecla, stands the church of Santo Domingo, built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century and characterized by dark red tiles, the interior has a nave, covered by a simple barrel vault with Baroque altar.

La Catedral de Nuestra Senora de las ves Nie, built between the fourteenth and sixteenth century, stands at the point where we have followed in the centuries before a Roman temple, an early Christian basilica and then finally an Arab mosque. Recently restored, it now appears in its original form: in particular note are three apses decorated chapels and the choir. Beside the cathedral is the sacristy, where a small museum houses some work in gold and some sacred paintings.
The area of Ses Salines, where lie the structures for the extraction of sea salt, used in the first centuries by the Carthaginians, then by the Romans and then by Arabs.
The salt is structured in a dramatic show available to the board and you can extract about 70,000 tons of salt each year.
The process is very simple and consists in letting evaporate sea water in special tanks and split in the crusts of salt remaining at the end of the process. From here the salt side towards northern Europe for use in cod conservation.
This area is of great interest as it is also an important oasis for migrating birds.
We extend a very beautiful beach and quiet contrasts sharply with the hustle and bustle of people that characterizes other places on this stretch of coast.

SANT ANTONI DI PORTMANY
After the capital, the main town is Saint Antonio de Portmany, along the west founded by the Romans with the name of Portus Magnus, was once a simple fishing village, today is a tourist Chesi distinction, with regard to accommodation hotel. In recent years, however, work for improvement and the creation of large pedestrian areas have had the merit of bringing the historic center of town looks more like the original.
In front of the inlet port of Cala de Sant Antoni is the Ou de Colon, a huge modern sculpture of 700 kg day is the famous "Egg of Columbus", a scholar who wants the original Ibiza, containing an image of Madonna.
The entire area between the church and the market is littered with restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
At the center there is a way that the evening is transformed and becomes the epicenter of entertainment, called "Crazy Street

XARRACA - PORTINAX
Heading north we reach Balāfia, an ancient village surrounded by fortifications, and Cala Portinatx, deep bay in the most northern island. The bay next to Cala Portinatx is Xarraca, where once stood the house, now converted into a restaurant, friction Swiss Ursula Andress. The stretch of coast between San Antonio and Portinatx is certainly the most beautiful island, sailing along a continuous succession of rocks overlooking the sea, interrupted only by a few white beach.
